Here is an updated version of the original Technical Issues Guide. It's been reformated to a a F.A.Q-style with a few additions. We hope this helps.
Q: I am having patching issues. Please help.
A: If you are having patching issues make sure your computer account is set to Administrator. A limited user account cannot write or modify information such as allowing MapleStory to finish patching.
When MapleStory servers are up and ready for players to patch, the servers are hammered by players downloading. Upon reaching Creating: Base.wz, please be patient. While MapleStory is patching, please try to avoid running programs that are processor/internet intensive. Such programs may only prolong your patching.
If Base.wz does not patch after a few moments, cancel the patch and download the manual patcher from our website - http://download.mapleglobal.com/download/FullVersion/ManualPatch.exe.
The manual patcher is only available for users patching from the last client to our newly released client. Older versions of the client will not be supported by the manual patcher. To use the manual patcher, download it and double-click on the executable. Select the folder where the game is installed. For most users, this folder is C:\Nexon\MapleStory. If you receive an error (maplestory.exe not found), please select the correct folder.
If the manual patcher does not work, you will need to reinstall the client. Please make sure to save all the files you wish to save from your currently installed client such as screenshots. Next, download the client from our website - http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Downloads/GamePatches and remove MapleStory from your computer by accessing the Control Panels -> Add/Remove Programs. Once MapleStory is re-installed, launch the program and everything should work. If you encounter any other issues, please read through the guide for other suggestions.
Q: Why can’t I make play this version of MapleStory?
A: If you created your account at http://www.mapleglobal.com, you should be using the official Global MapleStory client. We also license out MapleStory to licensees in South Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Europe and now including Hong Kong. (http://www.maplestory.com) New registration from Europe after May 23rd, 2007 will not be able to play on the Global servers.
Because we must protect our licensees’ interests, users from those licensed regions are blocked from playing on MapleGlobal servers. If you are trying to log on the Global servers from the country/region mentioned above, you won’t be able to play.
Q: I have a Mac. Can I run MapleStory?
A: Currently, we do not offer support on Apple Operating Systems. We currently do not have any additional information if and when it will be available to Apple OS users.
Q: I’ve encountered this error: “Unable to connect to the login server.
Either you are not online or MapleStory is going through a server check. Please check the MapleStory homepage for more information.”
A: First, be sure that MapleStory is currently not going through a server check. You can see if there is a server check by going to our MapleStory homepage at http://maplestory.nexon.net/. If there isn’t a server check and you still get the error, you will need to check your connectivity. Make sure your network connections are enabled. MapleStory works best on a broadband connection. Also, the client may not be able to connect due to a firewall and/or virus protection preventing it. If you are running a firewall and/or virus protection, either disable it or set MapleStory on the allow list.
Q: Does MapleStory run on Windows Vista?
MapleStory does run on Windows Vista but not to its optimal performance. One suggestion to have MapleStory compatible with Windows Vista is setting the compatibility of the program. Right-click your shortcut to MapleStory or the exe file, select Properties, and click on the Compatibility tab. Once you have selected the tab, check the box Run this program in compatibility mode for: and select Windows XP in the drop-down menu. We also suggest that you restart your computer after applying the changes. MapleStory should work once these changes are applied.
Q: What is this “Failed in finding proper screen mode for Gr2D” error?
A: MapleStory uses an advance graphics rendering engine. If your video card does not support advance graphics, you will not be able to enjoy the world of MapleStory. If your video card does support advance graphics and the issue persists, please be sure you have updated your video graphics/display card drivers to the most recent version available and the latest Direct X driver. For information on updating your drivers, please contact your PC’s manufacturer or the manufacturer of the video card.
Q: Why does it say “Can’t find Maplestory.msi” and how do I find it?
This issue may be resulting from an improper removal of a previous MapleStory client. We suggest that you use the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility to remove the old MapleStory installer. After doing so please re-run MSSetup.exe to install MapleStory. You can find the Microsoft Windows Installer Cleanup Utility on Microsoft’s website support section.
Q: Help me! “Error 1335 - The cabinet file 'Data1.cab' required for this installation is corrupt and cannot be used”!
A: This error could happen for a couple of reasons. You Windows System and Window Installer could be out-of-date so please to update them. Also, make sure that your .cab file associations have not been changed. Usually programs that deal with file compression formats can change the default .cab file associations to their own program. You will need to set the .cab file back to the default.
If the above does not work, you may need to redownload and reinstall the game. You can download the client at
http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Downloads/GamePatches
Please refrain from using download accelerator/segmenter programs as it may corrupt the file. We also recommend not using any other programs that access the internet while your download is in progress should you encounter this issue.
Q: What can I do to resolve this error – “A hacking attempt has been detected and MapleStory will be closed”?
A: We recommend that you check if any Firewalls or Internet Security programs are running (by this meaning Norton Antivirus, McAfee Virus Protection, etc.). If you have any program that blocks the connection between the client and our server, we advise you to turn them off. If you are uncomfortable with turning off your firewall and/or virus protection, please configure it appropriately to allow MapleStory. Should the issue continue, please scan your PC for viruses, Trojans, spyware, etc. or for any illegal programs that may have been installed.
Q: I received some sort of error code looking like this: Error code: -2005XXXXXX (Unknown error code 0xXXXXXXXX)
A: There are a few reasons why this error occurs. This error normally results from incorrect Display drivers or an outdated version of DirectX. Please be sure to have the latest video card and DirectX drivers installed. Please contact your PC’s manufacturer or the video card’s manufacturer for information on installing an updated driver.
If you do not have the latest version of DirectX, you can also access it from our website - http://maplestory.nexon.net/WZ.ASPX?PART=/Downloads/GamePatches
Another reason why you may be experiencing your issue may be a result from a lack of available memory to load or run MapleStory. Please check our website for the minimum specifications to run MapleStory and close any other programs you maybe running in the background of your computer. You may also went to check to see if your computer ram is functioning correctly such as connected in place and not overheating. Please reboot your computer to refresh any settings.
What is this error – “Connection lost due to system error” mean?
This error is the result of an IP block. Nexon has licensed out MapleStory to licensees in South Korea, China, Taiwan, Japan, Singapore, Malaysia, Thailand, Europe, and Hong Kong. (Check http://www.maplestory.com for more information on localized versions.) MapleGlobal was created for countries/regions that do not have their own version of MapleStory. Because we must protect our licensees’ interests, we must block users from those licensed regions from playing on MapleGlobal. If you are trying to play our game from the countries/regions mentioned above, you will not be able to play Global MapleStory.
Q: I hear music but I see a black screen or I get the “Monitor out of range” error.
A: This issue may erupt from monitor frequencies MapleStory does not play on. To find a frequency for your monitor, browse to your MapleStory folder and run the Setup.exe. You will be prompted a pop-up stating:
This program sets your monitor frequency up for MapleStory. Please run this program if your screen turns pitch black, or if you see a warning on your monitor on exceeding the range of frequency of your monitor. When the game starts, are you able to see the game clearly?
Click NO and follow the instructions.
Q: MapleStory just doesn’t load when I double-click the short-cut/launch.
A: There are several reasons why this occurs. Your computer’s firewall or anti-virus could be blocking MapleStory and GameGuard from loading. Try closing any extra applications before starting the game as it may interfere with MapleStory and GameGuard. If you do not feel comfortable turning off your firewall/anti-virus, we suggest that you configure them accordingly to allow MapleStory and GameGuard. With this issue, we suggest that you find and open the MapleStory client folder. Located inside the folder is a folder titled GameGuard. Next, delete the GameGuard folder. Once you have deleted the folder, go ahead and launch MapleStory. GameGuard should patch and MapleStory will load.
Q: When I load MapleStory the logos go by like usual but then after MapleStory closes out and there is a blank error message with an OK button.
A: Give MapleStory a few minutes after attempting to start it again. Once you start MapleStory up again the error should not reoccur. This error happens occasionally. If it reoccurs, please check your Task Manager to make sure all MapleStory and GameGuard tasks have ended. Restart your computer and load MapleStory like you normally do.
Q: I am experiencing GameGuard Error 114, 340 or 380.
Programs you have currently running are conflicting with GameGuard. First, we advise you to restart your computer. You should also check the connectivity of your Internet connection. A slowed internet connection or disrupted internet connection from processor/internet intensive programs may be preventing GameGuard to load. GameGuard could also be blocked by a firewall and/or anti-virus protection programs. Please disable these programs or set it to allow MapleStory/GameGuard accordingly.
Q: I am experiencing some PayPal issues.
A: Please read the NX Purchasing & Inquiry Guide located in the Cash Shop section of the forums.
Q: I received my server transfer but now my character can’t drop, trade, buy or pick-up items. I’m also not on rankings!
A: It may take up to 24 hours for your character to stabilize after the transfer. If you are experiencing this issue longer than 24 hours, please submit a ticket to our support system.
Q: I need a pin reset! Hepl me!
Automatic Pin Reset has been implemented. Players are now able to reset their own pin. To reset your pin, please log into your MapleStory account on the website - http://maplestory.nexon.net. Proceed to Account Info and verify your information. After verifying your information you will find a button for a pin reset. When you complete the pin reset, an email will be sent to the registered email on the account. Please be sure that you remember the email address you registered your account with. A verification link will be sent to your registered email. By clicking on the verification link or copying it onto Internet Explorer, your pin is wiped from your account. When you log onto MapleStory, it will ask you to select a new pin.
If none of the recommended actions help and the issue persists, please submit a ticket to our customer service system. You can log a ticket by logging onto the website (http://maplestory.nexon.net/), click on the Support menu located on top and select Email of Inquiry or Contact Us. Please include a full detailed account of your issue so the CS/GM agent can better assist you.
In addition, if you had a question that was not addressed above please check out the other guides available on the forums as they may be able to answer your question or point you in the right direction. The ticketing system is available for any other questions. The forums are also available for help from other players.
