Personally, I spend my NX carefully and I respect those who think rationally as opposed to paying lots and lots of NX for loads of expensive clothing.
One of the reasons that people without NX are avoided, as you point out, may be that they are looked down at since it seems that many rookie players are starting to already buy plenty of NX items early in their MS careers. However, in the situation you describe, I believe that these people on the boat are simply so impressed by how the people with NX differ from them that they find them interesting enough to begin a conversation with. It seems quite low for them to just start begging for NX, though. I'd rather avoid such interest.
The term "wall of text" only applies to ignorants who do not bother to read their opponent's mostly perfectly valid arguments before immaturily attempting to counter them.
