I'm guessing that your bow falls below 80% of it's original durability.  Lets say your weapon starts out with 10/10 durability.  You'll need to end up with at least an 8/8 (not 7/8 or a 1/8, but an 8/8) durability or higher with 100 proof before turning it into an ego.
