Complete guide: cooking for beginners (up to Rank D)

Hi! Welcome to my first guide ever! (sorry but I don't know how to insert photos)

My character is Dogsarecute, Rank D Shef, and I'm gonna be the greatest Shef in Mabinogi world! Believe it!

Why did I start Cooking, some of you may ask? Simple, BECAUSE IT'S SO FUN! XD

Are you ready soon-to-be Shefs? Than let's go!

    General information about cooking

There are 9 different kinds of cooking methods, with each Rank advancements you will get a new method, and the order is: Mixing, Baking, Boiling, Kneading, Steaming, Noodle making, Deep-Frying, Stir-Frying and Pasta making. (Ranks Novice to 8)

Remembering those are extremely important, as each method demands different tools and other requirements.

Cooking may be one of the easiest skills to improve in the game, but it's also very enjoyable and fun!

It might even worth a lot of money for you!

    Getting started

Cooking is a life skill, as you probaply guessed, so it doesn't have much to do in battle, right?

    WRONG!!!

Go to the battle hungry, and your character will be weaker. Period! Besides, most food can give some boosts to your status for a few minutes (HP, Str, etc.)

Now you are ready to go!

First, in order to learn the skill, go to Dunbarton's Resturaunt (appearing on the mini-map as grocery store).

Talk to Glenis in the resturaunt about skills. She will ask you if you wanna learn the Cooking skill. (click yes, duh xP)

She will give you a book. (DON'T YOU DARE LOSING IT UNTIL YOU LEARN THE SKILL!)

Advance read it. Congratulations! You are now a Novice Rank Shef!

From now on you can Mix ingredients! But how do you do that?

    Understanding the skill

Now that you have the cooking skill, you can finally start cooking.

In order to cook, you must equip 2 different cooking tools in your hands. You can buy them from Nora at Tir Chonaill or from Walter in Dunbarton.

In order to mix, you need to buy a cooking table and a cooking knife.

Now, after you bought them try using the skill.

A window will pop up now.

Look at the upper part of the window. You will see the word "Mixing"- that is the method of cooking that you select (you can select a method by clicking the arrow near it and click the method).

Don't worry. It doesn't matter to you until you are Rank E.

Below that you can see 3 windows. this is where you have to put ingredients in order to cook. (2-3 ingredients in each recipe)

At the bottom there is a line that you must fill when you cook. I'll explain about that later.

    close the window.

    Let's start cooking!

The recipe that I'm going to explain here is Strawberry Milk.

I chose this recipe for 2 main reasons:

    1. The ingredients are very cheap.

    2. This is really easy to make.

Before we start, look at the skill.

    The requirements for upgrade are:

Mix raw materials to make any food (6)

    Read a book about baking

Don't worry, I'll get to the book later.

The ingredients for this recipe are: strawberries, milk and sugar (duh).

You can buy strawberries and sugar from Glenis (buy at least 6 of each)

You can get milk from cows. (if you don't know how than read the netx part, if you do than skip it)

The recipe is: 30% strawberries, 65% milk and 5% sugar.

After you've got all of the ingerdients, and you equipped the tools, use the skill!

Place each ingredient in 1 of the windows (divide the strawberries and sugar so you use only 1 each time).

Now, click the "Add" button under the strawberries until the line fills almost until the 2nd "Add" button (the middle button), add milk until almost the end of the line, and fill the rest will sugar.

Click "Start"! (you won't be able to click this button until the line is full)

Now you can see your character making the food.

Congratulations! You made your first dish!

Note that on the screen appears a tip. For example: "it seems milk was used 3.00%~6.00% over the necessery".

Follow that tip. (If there is no tip, and only the message "A very appetizing dish has been completed" it means you have made the dish perfectly!)

Look at the food you've just made that appeared in your inventory. (unless you have no slot lolz)

You can see it's description and below it some stars- the stars indicate the quality of the dish. The better the quality, the more stars and the better effects (food can increase some of your status like I wrote at the beginning).

Hint: If you make a perfect dish and eat it, you should see a short video (hehe). The video depends on the dish you've ate.

    Hint: Tempting dish= 4 stars, Appetizing dish= 5 stars.

Very important: Sometimes the skill requires making or eating of a GOOD dish- that means it has to be 4 or 5 stars.

Easy steps for getting milk (not a copyright from the book lol)

    1. Get an Empty Bottle. This can be obtained by either a quest, a part-time job or by buying from Walter at Dunbarton's General shop for 400g.

    2. Find a cow. Cows can be found at Dunbarton's south-west plains.

    3. Empty your left hand and put the bottle in your right hand.

    4. Click the cow. If it moves while you milk it the milking will fail and you will have to do it again.

    Advancing to Rank F

Now that you've made your first dish, the other 5 should be a piece of cake xP.

After you are done with the cooking part, go to the Bookstore and buy the book about baking, required by the skill ("Master Chef's Cooking Class:

    Baking").

    Advanced read it.

Congratulations! You can now advance to Rank F cooking! (at the cost of 3 AP)

    Rank F Cooking- Baking

Welcome to the hardest rank to fully train... And why? -If you look on the requirements for advancement, you will see that one of them is "Unknown

training method"- you must eat 20 times a dish made by the next method of cooking: Boiling. That means you have to get it from somewhere else-

a NPC or another person. Since no NPC is selling boiled food, you must get it from other people who have Rank E or higher cooking.

You might be wondering who helped me, so here it is: Thank you Serenitywulf!!!

Tip: If you have either "Friend of Nora" or "Friend of Deian" title, you can get a boiled egg from endelyon at Tir Chonaill's Church by using it and

starting a conversation with her (one egg per Mabinogi time day)- this is a requirement that appears every 2 Ranks.

VERY IMPORTANT: Don't buy steamed rice from NPCs! This is steamed food (duh) which is need only on Rank D training! You'll just waste your

    Money...

    Well, back to buisness:

This time you get a completely new method of cooking- Baking.

For this method you need completely different tools: Cooking Dipper and Cooking Pot.

This method for training is much harder to use for 2 main reasons:

    1. The Cooking Pot is VERY expensive- 23,000g from NPC.

    2. You can only bake near a Cooking Oven or a Campfire.

After you've got the correct tools, and you are near an Oven or Campfire, you can finally start Baking!

    And for the requirements:

Make a very good baked food (10)

    Succeed at baking (10)

Eat a boiled food without sharing (20)- That's the unknown training method.

Eat a good baked food (20)

    Succeed at mixing (50)

Read a book about Boiling (1)- again, buy it from the Bookstore.

I'm repeating this again: As long as you do everything else, you don't have to do the unknown training method to Rank up! (I recommend you to

skip it unless you now any Rank E or D Shef.

For this rank, my recommended recipe is garlic bread for 2 very simple reason:

    1. It's VERY easy to get. Both of the ingredients are sold by Glenis.

    2. The recipe itself is very simple! Only 2 ingredients- bread and garlic. (DUH!)

The only problem is that it's relatively expensive- 66g for each dish.

The recipe is: 85% bread and 15% garlic.

Luckily, this upgrade requires only 2 AP, but save some AP, cause you need 5 for the next upgrade.

    Rank E Cooking- Boiling

Preperations: None! Yep. This method requires the exact same Cooking Tools as baking, and again, you must be near a Cooking Oven or

    a Campfire.

But this is where you must be careful. Look again at the list of cooking methods. You MUST select "Boiling" before using a boiling recipe, or else

the cooking will FAIL. Same with baking: if boiling is selected, change it to baking if you are using a baking recipe or it will fail.

This time the training is much easier since you aren't required to eat food of the next rank (well actually, every food that can be made with

Kneading- the next method isn't edible as it is, as it must be baked or fried afterwards). But this comes with the price of costy upgrade- 5 AP as I

    wrote before.

    The requirements for upgrading are:

Make a very good boiled food (10)

    Succeed at boiling (10)

Eat a good boiled food (30)

    Succeed at baking (30)

Reading a book about Kneading (1)- unfortunately this is the last book available in the Bookstore.

My favourite recipes are boiled egg and boiled potato, again, those are really easy to make. Especially if you are at Dunbarton.

To get eggs simply click a hen with empty hands, and to get potatoes equip only a weapon for gather potatoes at the weapon shop or blacksmith

shop, and than click the green plants at the potato pathes near dunbarton (mostly north).

Tip: Every boiled food must have water as an ingredient (duh), that's why it's best to be at Dunbarton, as the well and the cooking oven are at the

same place, near the resturaunt. (If you don't know how to get water than read the next part, if you do than skip it xP)

The recipes are: Boiled egg- 35% egg, 60% water and 5% salt.

Boiled potato- 40% potato, 55% water and 5% salt.

    How to get bottled water

Just look up at the milking steps. It's exactly the same, only you need to click on a well, a river or the reservior at Tir Chonaill.

    Rank D Cooking- Kneading

Congratulations! You've made it to the highest rank of cooking available yet!

It's time to use your old cooking table again and buy the last of the cooking tools- Rolling Pin!

Well, I have to admit, this is the most useless and annoying cooking method in the game, especially now-

Kneading can only make 3 possible dishes- 2 of them requires flour which is extremely annoying to get and you can only make bread with it! (Flour

    Dough, duh).

1 of the 2 requiring flour requires an ingredient that isn't available (Corn bread dough), and the third dish isn't usable until you are at Rank A Cooking

    (Fry skin).

So only the reasonable recipe you can make is fry skin- 60% water, 25% egg and 15% fry powder (you can buy it from Glenis and maybe Caitin).

Here are the requirements for advancing:

    Succeed at kneading (20)

    Succeed at boiling (20)

Eat a steamed food without sharing (20)- unknown training method*

Eat a good boiled food (50)

    Succeed at baking (50)

Read a book about steaming (1)**

*Once again, this isn't required as long as you do the rest, but it's much easier to do since you can just buy steamed rice from Caitin or Glenis

    (1650g each).

**And that's the reason Rank C isn't available yet... The only place this book is available is Emain macha, which will only be available in G2.

    Conclusion

I hope you've learned a few things through my guide!

I will update my guide after I learn a few things about the next Ranks first-handed!

Feel free to ask me any question you have about cooking! I hope I will be able to answer!

I am Dogsarecute, Rank D Shef! And I promise you I will be the greatest Shef in Mabinogi world ever! Believe it!

Re: Complete guide: cooking for beginners (up to Rank D)

this guide is an excellent start.  I do have some suggestions for additions

Low cost alternative to garlic bread:    if you dont' want to spend the gold for garlic bread, you can make friend eggs instead, which jsut use salt and 1 egg. Eggs are VERY fast to gather and slt costs 10 gold, so instead of aroudn 100gp each you can make friend eggs for 10% fo that.  it saves a decent chunk of gold if you don't midn spening 10 seconds or so per egg.   it also can be easily made in tir, which has somr advantages.

Improved levelling method for the final 2 ranks:  When going from rank E to rank D eat as few boiled eggs/potatos as possible to rank up ( 10 is the # I think).  You will need all your extras next rank and it is MUCH easier to make garlic bread/fried eggs than boiled eggs.

Q: How to becoem thin after levelling cooking?

Your last 2 levels require you to eat a LOT of boiled eggs.  just eat them slowly while you work on other things and you'll slim down a lot.

Re: Complete guide: cooking for beginners (up to Rank D)

There was a time when I made fried eggs, but I got too bored with that dish so I went for something else, besides I usually work on my cooking in dunbarton, where getting eggs is a bit harder.

    Very nice suggestions indeed!

But I care about the skill a LOT MORE than I care about my character's looks. xP

You are really showing some creativity. A very important quality for a Chef!

Keep going and I know you'll be a great Chef someday! Maybe even in real life... xD

Re: Complete guide: cooking for beginners (up to Rank D)

Here are the answers to your problems:

Dimplegirl, just look at what your skill requires.

You probaply just didn't buy the book, or you bought the wrong one.

The discription of the book will say that it will help you to LEARN the cooking skill (baking book).

In case you forgot, you can buy all the books up to Rank D at the Bookstore of Dunbarton.

Or, but less likely, you need to make 5 more mixed dishes.

    It can't be anything else.

    Just check your skill discription.

Moonchan, when you talk to Walter about "Shop", you have to click the arrow at the top pointing to the right until you see the words "Cooking Appliances" (same thing for Nora).

Yeah it took some time for me too xP

I hope I answered your questions.

    =============================================

Oh I forgot, it also might happened cause your character failed in advanced reading it.

You must repeat "Advanced reading" until it succeeded, or the skill will continue to ask it from you.

This thread is wonderful.  When I start a new character I'll be sure to check on this from time to time.  I want to be a great chef as well.  I'll be like Gordon Ramsey, with a even worse temper!

I found that for Rank F, you can buy a food to lvl that unknown training. I found that "Curry and Rice", although it's considered a "simmer" food, it's under boiling. It's sold by the older master chef guy (can't remember the name) in Emain Macha at the restaurant. over 2k during the week but on fridays it's about 1.9k pricey but I am lvling it with it, it's just costly X.x

Re: Complete guide: cooking for beginners (up to Rank D)

"Boiled potato- 40% potato, 55% water and 5% salt"

Seriously?  Is this the REAL recipe?  I've yet to find a recipe that I fail EVERY time. ... I can make cheese gratin consistently 4 or 5 stars,

but I can't make even a 1-star of boiled potato!? Something is screwwy...  Has anyone tried this in the past few days?  What gives?

I'm using a jar of water, potatoes that I dug up from outside Dunbarton, and salt from Glenis ... wait a minute ... I bet I know what is wrong ...

... I bet it defaults to ... yup. I realized that I have to select "Simmer" instead of "Bake"  (I was spoiled at Rank F, where it automatically

    selected Fire.)

So...yeah, the selection box in the cooking window is your friend.  Let's see how my first boiled potato comes out... Grr...forgot to change

    the option again!

OK...last time before bed.  This is driving me nuts...

Yay!  Very appetising!  (cute animation too.  She just tapped the ladle in her hand, and waited for it to cook.)

Awesome.  Thanks for your help. (and your patience as you read my mini-saga)
