I do all of these by theway.
1. Overheating
If you use a laptop then you can help circulateair under it by putting some blocks on the corners of the bottom. Also make sure that the vents are clear from anything. DO NOT USE A FAN to try yo help cool it down. This will only blow air back inside of the computer which can cause damage. Put your hand about an inch from the vents. You should feel some cool air coming out. If you do not then you should probably replace your fans.
2. RAM (Random Access Memory) and CPU (CentralProcessing Unit)
Some process can slow down your computer whichwill slow down your game. If you go to the task manager and sort by CPU or Memory,you may see hat some processes use lots of CPU or Memory. Anything over about10 CPU is bad and anything over about 10 MB of RAM is bad too. (Bad for gaming that is.) You can rightclick on those processes and click end. Some of them are needed so be sure youknow what they are. If you end them and they keep coming back, you can downloadComodo Internet Securityhttp://personalfirewall.comodo.com/ and clickon the "__ processes are running", right click the process there andselect terminate and block. This is also a great tool for protecting yourcomputer from Viruses and Mal ware which can slow down your computer. It doesnot take much memory to run. Also, you can add more memory for about $30-$50which really speed up your computer. Make sure you buy the right memory bychecking on a free scan on the internet. A program to automatically free up space and close unnecessary processes is called Game Booster.
3. Junk Files, Registry errors and a Fragmented harddrive
These can really slow up your computer bytaking up unnecessary space. Lookup and download these tools- Ccleaner(Junk files),Comodo System Cleaner (Registry errors and some junkfiles), Defragler(Fragmented hard drive).
4. Graphics card settings
If you go to your graphics card settings (probablyin the control panel) you can change the quality. I have an Nvidia graphicscard so I can change between Quality, Balanced and Performance. Going towardsthe low quality or performance side will reduce lag and make he game smootherbut it will reduce the quality and vice versa for the quality side. You can also update your graphics card or buy a new one. Just look up the brand of the graphics card that you have and you can get a free update there. Also, change the in game settings to the low, color to 16 bit and screen resolution to the lowest (this makes the game supper fast but it may take a few times to get used to it.)
