Mac + Parallels + Windows XP = Having a problem...

I've just installed my parallels desktop with a running copy of Windows XP.  The game seemed to have downloaded and installed seamlessly, however, when I launch the game, It says 'Mabinogo.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close...so on so forth...'.  I Don't really know if something wasn't done right, because as far as I know, this is supposed to work be it with parallels or bootcamp.  I did just have bootcamp, but decided to take it away and use parallels instead.  It DID work with bootcamp for my mac.  Any idea's?

Mabinogi works fine with Boot Camp because you end up rebooting your computer (that's the "boot" in "boot camp") in Windows. It's just like running a regular Windows computer, only on Apple hardware.

Parallels works a little differently.  You're still running the Mac OS, but Parallels lets you run windows software.  It's an emulator, just like the NES emulators people use to play old Nintendo games on their computers.  The probelm is, when you run windows software in an emulator, graphics and sound have to go through Parallels to get to your hardware.  That is, Mabinogi doesn't tell your graphics card what to display, it instead tells Parallels what to display, and Paralles talks to your graphics card.  And since Mabinogi is looking for graphics drivers and sees Parallels instead, it can crash, refuse to run, or complain about graphics drivers.

Your best bet is to continue using Boot Camp.

Hah, I wasn't sure if I was going to get a response any time soon.  Thank you very much.  You were very informative!  I'm glad to know the problem, even though now I'm in a situation that royally sucks.  Well, let me try and get rid of parallels now, and go through bootcamp again.  The only positive side to this is that I was going to redo bootcamp anyhow to give it more memory when partitioning.  Thanks again!

You can keep Parallels and Boot Camp at the same time.  In fact, there's a way to set it up so that the Windows installation used for Boot Camp is the same as for Parallels.  You just have to boot into Windows to run Mabinogi - you can still run other programs under Parallels while you're in Mac mode.

It took a minute, but I found this guide to help you install windows under Boot Camp and Parallels simultaneously.  I hope this helps!
