Kontra's Sniper: Enter Tyballa! - Part Four

After knocking out and gagging the remaining guards, Shenon kicked open the door very loudly. Tyballa snarled very softly under her breath. “Don’t do that again. You could get the Paladins to come here!”
Shenon smirked. “Oh, please. The Paladins aren’t even real.”
“How would you know that, you dunce? You only got that information from Esras. Oh, hell, whatever. Just shut up and please, let’s get this over with.”
The room was much plainer than you’d think a Duke’s throne room would be. The floor was nothing out of the ordinary and the walls were a plain peach. The ceilings were draped with ornate gold-edged vividly colored banners, but besides that, the room was…boring. There really was no other was to describe it.
    Shenon sniffed.
“No treasure? I bet all the other people are getting some loot..” He frowned.
“Shut up, please. We seriously need to get this over with.” Tyballa had a knot in her stomach.

"Aha!" Shenon slowly fingered the ornately carved throne. He flicked it a couple times and tested the material. "Mother-of-pearl, gilded wood..and this is the finest fabric I've ever seen! Heh, this is probably the only thing in here worth stealing!" Tyballa chided him and slapped his fingers away. "Don't touch it. You'll leave evidence we were here. I'm sure the Lord would notice if his fancy chair suddenly disappeared. Now if I were a secret compartment, where would I be?"
Shenon snorted. "Oh, forget that. Look at this funny writing here on that dumb map you..liberated from the guards."
    Funny writing?
"Hand it over, Shenon. It could be something..useful."
The map had a riddle on it. Of course.
In a clear voice, Tyballa read the riddle aloud. "I can be many colors and shades in many designs. I often sleep curled up. I can devour a thousand sheep and still my hunger will not be sated. What am I?"
A woolen rug. Was that supposed to be funny?
Tyballa turned to the throne and kicked off the rug concealed behind it. Sure enough, there was a trapdoor underneath.

"Oooh! Oooh!" Shenon leaped from shelf to shelf in the underground cellar. "This looks like I could pawn it off for a lot; no, this one's better!" He picked up an iridescent strand of beads.
"You think I'll make enough money to repair the ship back home?"
    "Maybe."
Tyballa wasn't paying attention, she was distracted by a particular shelf. “Hey..Shenon, get over here. See this shelf? It looks new, as if it's been freshly replaced. Looks like someone's been here before us..."
She examined it further, then gasped. "...It's a fake shelf!" She punched the wood cleanly in two. Under the rotting remains was an old book.
"Ugh, that looks gross." Shenon shuddered. "I guess that's the thing the boss wants? Well, she can keep it."
Tyballa flipped through the yellowed pages. "Huh? Golem transmuting? Why the hell would Esras want this?" This is a necromancy book. What would Esras be messing around with this?
Shenon stroked his claimed treasures. "Eh, don't bother about that stuff. After we get rich, what the boss does doesn't concern me. Even if she does something too suspicious, I'm sure she won't go too far. Even Esras fears the fickle crowd. I'm more concerned about our paycheck than what she does."
"Shut up..shut up! I hear someone!"
A guard casually walked down the staircase, whistling a familiar tune. As fast as an arrow from a bow, Tyballa took his throat in her hands and snapped his neck. He dropped to the floor with a sickening thud, a strangled cry ripping from his throat. How many men have I killed now? She didn't like to kill, but she knew it was all too necessary, even though the man's tortured face continued to torment her.

After gathering up the men and heading back to camp, before giving Esras her report, Tyballa decided to look at the book one more time. The book was full of spells and more magic that she couldn’t understand. However, at the back of the book, there was a page that caught her interest. She stared intently at the page, attempting to understand.
    "Tabhartas?"

Tyballa whistled intently into the night. A dog, pale snowy-white fur bristling in the cold air, answered her call. His sleek fur shone, glittering again the moonlight. "Come, my friend." Tyballa murmured, knowing that the extraordinary beast would be able to hear. "Ylinn..." She gently stroked his fur, tenderly murmuring endearments into his ear.
"There is a reason...a reason why I called you here. Esras, I do not trust her. If she does anything suspicious, I want you to kill her."
