Saying "we want to be the best" means little when you don't say what you want to be the best in.

There isn't much in the game at the moment to even say that 'we are the best'. Most guilds if anything are here as a social network and will usually help whoever is in need of help within. If you are in search of a guild, you need to see if you can mesh with the current guild members. Not being able to enjoy yourself in a guild defeats the purpose of being in one. Maybe when there is houses or something guilds can claim to have the prettiest house of them all.

For example, a guild could be leading in available resources for inter-guild leveling via the use of Life skills - whether it range from blacksmithing, enchanting, potion stock etc. Of course, news of that would usually be kept low, just as if someone keeps the details of their incomes to themselves.

True enough. As a guild you can help level up someones refining skill, tailoring skill, weaving skill and so on. Thus making them the "guild person".

I would still count that as assisting other guild members. For instance yesterday we mined a bunch in Bangor for the refiners in the guild. Having specific guild jobs is a step in the right direction but it's still not focused enough for guild basis other than assisting each other and making new connections/friends.

Maybe I'm comparing the guild system to stuff like WoW and EQ, where you can actually feel like you have accomplished something as an entire guild. Of course we are in the beginning stages of the game, I'm pretty sure a lot things will be covered by then. Hell, you can't even tell who's online in your own guild unless you have them under your friends list, I didn't like that in FFXI (aka Linkshell) at all.
