    Mabinogi Ranged Guide

    Gaining the Ranged Skills

The first step to becoming an archer is to acquire the two ranged skills: 'Ranged Attack' and 'Magnum Shot'. This can be done by talking to various NPC's in Tir Chonaill (the starting point of your Mabinogi adventure):

    1) When you feel that you are ready to get started, find Trefor (located on on the path leading to Alby Dungeon) to learn about the most basic ranged skill: Ranged Attack. While in conversation with Trefor, use the keyword 'Skills' and hey will give you a new keyword listed as 'Ranged Attack' (accessible by choosing 'memo') as well as directions to visit his former teacher, Renald (located at the School). Talk to Renald, using the 'Ranged Attack' keyword that you have just acquired and he will inform you that you need to buy a bow in order to learn this skill; 'Bow' will then be added to your keyword log. In order to buy a bow, head over to Ferghus (the Blacksmith) and simply buy the Short Bow buy choosing 'Shop'. Also be sure to buy a bunch of arrows to get you started. To equip a bow and arrows, simply click and drag it to the left of your inventory; its correct placement will be indicated by a flashing box. Once you have done this, you will automatically gain knowledge of the Ranged Attack skill. You can then find out about how to train this skill by pressing 'S', which will bring up the 'Skill' window. Clicking on the 'Ranged Attack' skill, another window will appear stating the requirements that need to be fulfilled in order to raise the skills rank.

*As you complete each task, a bar will slowly fill up indicating your progress toward the next skill rank. Once the bar is full (it will appear in silver), you can advance it if you have the required AP. However, if you wish to gain full experience from training a skill (called 'Perfect Training'), you must complete all requirements fully – which sometimes involves 'Unknown Training Methods' which can be tricky to figure out. Perfect Training progress is indicated in red after basic training of the skill has been completed. All skills start of with the 'Novice' rank, then go from F-A, 9-1 (1 being the highest skill level).*

    2) After learning the Ranged Attack, you can move on to learning the 'Magnum Shot' skill. In order to do so, talk to the village Chief Duncan (located at the 'Chief's House') using the keyword 'Magnum Shot' (you automatically acquire this keyword after learning the Ranged Attack skill). He will then you to talk to Trefor once again; use the same keyword with Trefor to receive directions to talk with Renald a second time. Repeat using the Magnum Shot keyword with Renald and you will finally gain knowledge of the skill. The Magnum Shot skill can be trained in the same fashion as the Ranged Attack (described above).

*Eventually there will be more ranged skills available for the bow through both Trefor in Tir Chonaill and Arwanen in Dunbarton.*

*By learning the Ranged Skill, you will eventually receive a special quest which awards you 1 bonus AP after completion (Hunt 30 Red Foxes); additionally, by learning the Magnum Shot, you will eventually receive a quest 'To Reach Rank 9' in that skill (which awards 2 bonus AP upon completion)*

    Using the Ranged Skills
For those new to the ranged skills, Ranged Attack is an archer's normal attack; raising its rank increases your 'DEX' (the main contributing factor to your damage output), aiming speed, and maximum damage. Upon a successful hit, the targeted monster will be stunned for a moment but will not be knocked back from the shot.

The Magnum shot is currently the archer's single 'special attack', which applies 2xx% of normal damage ranged damage with the included bonus of knocking the monster down upon a successful hit; each raised skill rank will increase its percent power over a normal ranged shot. One thing to remember is that the Magnum shot, while powerful, takes a while longer to aim than Ranged Attack; it also constantly consumes stamina until the shot is released unlike Ranged Attack which only uses a set amount of stamina to load the skill.

If you're wondering what aiming speed is all about, firing an arrow with any given bow in Mabinogi requires you to first load the skill, take aim, and then fire. Clicking once with the left mouse button will load a skill. The skill you have chosen is clearly indicated by an icon above your character's head. While the skill is loading, the icon will appear to be flashing until it has fully loaded. Once a skill has been completely loaded, click again to start the aiming meter. Accuracy automatically rises to a maximum of 99% (when the targeted monster is stationary), 90% (when it is walking), and 80% (when it is running). It is recommended that you wait until the meter has risen over 75% before clicking again to release the arrow. Keep in mind that there is always a 1-20% chance that you shot will miss.

In order to make targeting monsters easier, hold down the right Ctrl button (to automatically target the monster closest to your cursor) and then use a skill. This saves both time and effort when dealing with a large mob.

*You may want to disable 'Reserve Attack Option" under Options>Game; change it to 'Once' or 'Not Used' in order not to automatically load a normal shot after your first shot and so on. This will save you some trouble, especially when chaining Magnum Shots one after the other. Choosing 'Multiple Times' will load a normal ranged shot after each shot and may be best suited when dealing with weak mobs.*

Keep in mind that aiming is much quicker and accuracy is much higher when the targeted monster is close to you – which only makes sense. Also, if you have used the method described above and are holding down the right Ctrl button whilst loading a skill, your cursor should indicate whether or not the targeted enemy is within range of your bow. It will state 'Range Out' if the target is too far away from your current position, in which case you can click to move to a closer location. This should allow you to get closer to the targeted enemy while still having the skill loaded and ready to go.

    Useful Secondary Skills

Of course, you need the basic melee skills - 'Smash', 'Defense', and 'Counterattack' (which can be learned through the beginner's quests) - for emergencies and for when you run out of arrows. Actually, you can acquire Rank F in Defense, 'Combat Mastery', and 'Sharp Mind' just by completing the beginner's quests. What's more, doesn't cost you a single AP to raise those three skills to that rank.

Counterattack is the most useful for an archer as it prevents you from taking a hit, and at the same time, provides some distance between you and the targeted monster.

Defense is risky for an archer as it relies heavily on how much defense and protection you have. Unless you have decent equipment boosting these stats, use it only as a last resort. Windmill, which has a melee 'Area of Effect', is another skill which can also be used to counter an oncoming monster; however, be cautious when using this skill as it consumes 10% of your current hit points each time it is used.

The only other 'Combat Skill' that is highly recommend for an archer would be the 'Critical' skill. This skill can only be learned once you have received a critical hit from a monster. Increasing its rank will increase the damage inflicted upon a successful critical hit.

It is recommended that you leave Sharp Mind (gives you the ability to see what skill a monster is using) at rank F until a later time; this is because an archer's tactic is to down a monster before it even has a chance to use a skill against you. In any case, Sharp Mind does not work 100% of the time, and even then only works on the skills you currently know about (ie. you will not be able to see their unique special attacks). Eventually, as you become more experienced, you will learn to read the tendencies and patterns of certain monsters without ever relying on Sharp Mind.

Finally, any of the 'Life Skills' that adds DEX, 'WILL' or 'LUCK' can also be raised if you so choose that path.

*WILL increases your stamina and increases your chances of going into 'Deadly State' rather than dieing after receiving a deadly blow, while LUCK increases your critical rate.*

    Getting Started with Ranged Skills
Starting out with just the two ranged skills can be quite challenging, which is why it is recommend that you raising those skills as soon as you are able to. Don't worry too much about completing Perfect Training for each rank as the experience bonus you receive is insignificant in most cases. Also if you are starting out with a new archer character and have another character available, it is suggested that you buy either a long bow or composite bow from Dunbarton for transfer to your new character. In this way, you can get off to training your ranged skills right away and have the advantage of the superior range than that provided by the short bows sold by Ferghus. The increased range is really helpful at the lower levels as your aiming speed and damage will prove to be lacking.

    Useful Tips and Tactics
One strategy to use once your aiming speed and damage are decent, is to chain Magnum Shots one after the other. With around Rank C in Ranged Attack and Magnum Shot, you should be able to get your accuracy up to at least 80% for each successive shot. If each shot succeeds in hitting, you should be able to take out most monsters before they even get close to you. The knock back on the ranged Magnum Shot is one of the best in the game and can be compared to the melee Smash skill. Keeping the targeted monster knocked back and on the ground should be your top priority.

It is suggested that you use a title that increases your DEX, WILL, LUCK, or HP. One title that does so is the 'Bear Slayer at 10' title. However, it is suggested that you use the "Golem Slayer" or any other title that gives +10 DEX or more; the increased damage from the extra DEX is really a welcome bonus.

For even more damage, bring along some firewood to make a campfire within your hunting ground. Loading any ranged skill near a campfire will automatically set your arrow alight and give a decent amount of added fire damage to all of your shots.

*You can also acquire the "Fire Arrow" title through this technique (which is required for the advanced ranged skill 'Arrow Revolver' which is yet to be released)*

Another use for campfires is for 'trapping' powerful aggressive monsters such as bears. Larger monsters will often get stuck around sharp corners or any object in the way; if you place a campfire in the right location and position, you can create a sort of trap for your these monsters. I suggest placing a campfire as close to a small-medium sized tree as possible and then shooting a monster through the gap. Doing so will lure it into your trap and cause it to get stuck while trying to reach you. Even though the monster will not be able to move any close, positioning yourself at the right angle will allow you to attack it from a safe distance. Be sure not to use Magnum Shot, as that skill will release it from its bonds and it will be free to charge it you; use your normal Ranged Attack (which does not have the knock back effect) and rely on your criticals to quickly bring down large monsters. However, since the monster is indeed stuck, you have plenty of time to bring it down as long as you stay at that angle and at a safe distance. Of course, this will not work when facing other ranged or magic-based monsters.

    Choosing Your Equipment

As far as bows go, there are basically 3 types and archer can choose from: Short, Long, and Composite. Short bows give good damage and speed at shorter distances, while long bows (sold by Nerys in Dunbarton) have the best range but are slow and sometimes inaccurate. Composite bows (also sold in Dunbarton) are basically a combination of the two and offer the best damage and critical available. Bows can be upgraded for increased stats such as +Balance, +Critical, and +Damage.

Arrows, can be bought at any Weapon Shop or Blacksmith in 20's or 100's. As a precaution, you should always carry about 100 spare arrows in your inventory at anytime in case you do not get a chance to restock.

*Other bows yet to be implemented include the Leather Long Bow and Guardian Bow (will be sold by Edern in Bangor).*

Armors or clothing? The choice is really up to you. Armors give nice Defense and Protection bonuses but cost a lot to both buy and maintain. I would suggest getting a Light Armor set as opposed to a heavy armor as archers rarely intend to get into close combat. Light Armors have 4 Defense 1 Protection as opposed to Heavy Armor's 6 Defense 2 Protection. 'Defense' decreases damage taken while 'Protection' reduces a percentage of critical damage received. All armor can be upgraded a certain number of times.

There is also the choice of using Clothing, which all offer the standard 2 Defense but 0 Protection. Clothing has the advantage of being cheap, easy to maintain, and fashionable. As such, clothing is very popular choice among archers. There is even a Clothing set designed specifically for archers called the "Sandra's Sniper Suit" set; it is sold by Simon at the Clothing Store in Dunbarton and includes the Suit, Hat, Gloves and Boots.

Remember that clothing can also be upgraded; three upgrades are available for any clothing (other than your Newbie Clothing): +5 durability, +1 defense +1 durability, +1 protection +1 durability. These modifications can be done at the Clothing Store in Dunbarton at the cost of ~20 proficiency and a considerable amount of gold.

*Proficiency is gained through using an item for its intended purpose (not applicable for gloves, hats, or boots). Doing so will raise the proficiency percent on that item, which can then my exchanged for upgrades at a specific NPC.*

    Enchanting Your Equipment

The main concern for archers is that you will need plenty of 'Stamina' in order to carry out your ranged skills. Either enchant your gloves, hat, or boots (these are the equipments which cant be upgraded) or stock up on stamina potions - or better yet, do both! Other recommended enchants are +HP, +Critical, and +Balance.

*Enchant Scrolls can be obtained from treasure chests at the end of Dungeons (after defeating the boss) or bought from other players.*

    Eating a Balanced Diet

For archers, it is recommend that you use the basic 'balanced' Mabinogi diet - Berries, Bread, and Water. If you constantly chow down those berries, you'll eventually gain semi-permanent DEX and INT bonuses (which are reset if and when you rebirth). This can come as a nice bonus for archers (and mages). Bread fills your hunger fast and keeps your body full - not too skinny, but not too fat. Water maintains your body shape as well.

*For those who don't know how to obtain Water, first venture to Dunbarton and buy an Empty Bottle from Walter at the General Store. Equip it, then either fill it up at the well there (near the church), or go back to Tir Chonaill and fill it up at the stream (near the Blacksmith). Of course, if you still have that Bottle of Milk you received from one of the early quests (Hunt 5 Grey Wolves), you can just drink up the Milk and use the Empty Bottle without paying anything (Bottles are reusable).*

    Conclusion

Last point I want to make is to party! As an archer, you don't want to have to solo too often - there's always that 1-20% chance of your shot missing and you getting mobbed. Partying greatly increases your survival rate and usefulness until the other, more advanced, ranged skills are applied to the game - namely Arrow Revolver (fires a series of shots in succession with varying damage) and possibly Support Shot (which allows you to help a party member attack a monster without disrupting the battle). As for dungeon runs and various boss encounters, support your party by using Magnum Shot to knock back monsters if they gets too close . Well-timed shots are the key to supporting your party in these situations. Doing this also gives time for your melee-based party members to use their Smash skill while the monster is down and stunned or to apply a normal attack to cancel a potentially devastating skill.

    Re: Guidance Goodness! Event Guidelines

Guide on attitude you should and things to know when you are in a Party [Dungeon]

This guide is to show the attitude you should have in party.

The dungeons that are currently avaliable:

Tir Chornil: Alby Dungeon, Ciar Dungeon

    Dunbarton: Rabbie Dungeon, Math Dungeon

    Gairech: Fiodh Dungeon

    Bangor: Barri Dungeon

Not Opened as of Open Beta Phrase:

    San Meg Plateau: Peace Dungeon

Emain Macha: Runda Dungeon, Choill Dungeon

There are even more dungeons to come in future Generations.

Dungeons are unlike open fields, there's no camping penalties(if you stay at a one place killing monsters for too long, the exp you got will be halved. Minimum is 50% of the original exp you get from the same monster. So dungeon is a place to lv up and training.

Party with others can go thorough a dungeon faster and possibly reduce death and gain more exp from that.

Preparation before going into dungeon with a Party:

    1) Make sure you bring enough feathers. It's for your own good as you get exp from reviving, and it makes the dungeon run smoother as people won't have to run again or simply pissed because nobody can revive them. All party members should get enough feathers so nobody will be left behind.

    2) Make sure you learned first aid and bring bandages. And healing, if it's possible. First aid is very important for a dungeon run as it can heal wounds very quickly. Making a camp fire is ok as well, but the healing rate is much slower than first aid. Don't try to use bandages on your own because it will decrease the affect. It's best to use first aid on others when they are sitting. Same as healing. Healing yourself will eat up your stamina drastically.

You may learn first aid when you get treatment in a healer's house. And you learn healing from buying a book from the magic teacher Lassar or Stewart.

    3) Make sure you bring enough potions depends on your lv and need. Drinking potions is a personally thing. You should bring your own rather than asking somebody for it or just simply ask for healing.

    4) If you are leader, you can but party quests to help everybody earn some extra money. You are getting exp and money from monsters, it will be nicer to get some extras :)

Feathers checked. Bandages checked, potions checked. Now what? Time to rock! :D

Things you need to know when you are in dungeon:

Mabinogi has a unique combat system. Unlike the traditional MMOs, this is not a click on monster and drink potions game. If you made a mistake and got hit, most of the time you will die because monsters are much stronger than you (like Goblins). So..

    1) Wait for others when you arrive in a room early. Give some time for others to caught up. Don't just hit the box and let the monsters spawn. Make sure everybody is ready before you open the box or hit the orbit. It will be hard for those who are unprepared. If it's possible, just let one person to open the chest and hit the orbit.

    2) Choose your own monster when the monsters appear. As soon as you enter the room, 1 monster will fix its focus on you (as the exclamation mark shows that the monster had found you and ready to attack). Don't say you want to help him/her to kill the monster because the monster that has an eye on you will attack quickly. You failed to help others and you put yourself in great danger. Some monsters like wolves and spiders also have the similar property.

    3) Don't interrupt others when they are fighting. You finished your monsters. You want to help others but it's better NOT to intrude when they are fighting fine. Because monsters change targets easily and after you intrude, you don't know who the monster is going to attack.
Different people have different ways to fight, your can easily disturb other's rhythm when you intrude and possibly ending up killing somebody else. You can do it if you are 100% sure you can kill it in 1 hit so nobody will get hurt.

    4) When teammates got knocked down, don't just rush to revive but try to clear the monsters surrounding them before reviving them. Sometimes your teammates make mistakes and died. If your surrounding is cleared and no other monsters have exclamation marks on them, help revive your teammate. Help clear the monster surrounding him before rescuing him. And both should be prepared if some monsters charge up on you.
The bottom line is, make sure you are safe before you help. Or else nobody can help them if you died.

    5) Always click on the doors when you see one. Sometimes people just forget they have the key and just wait for the door to open. Next time just click on the door so the party don't have to search it. You lose nothing and everybody will benefit from this.

    6) If you have something to do and can't continue on the dungeon, make sure you leave the party and drop the key if you have one. If you need to leave for a while, quit the party so the people who fight won't lose any exp. You won't get the exp as well. Check your inventory to see if you have the key. Everybody will be upset if you have the key and they just stuck there. If you are signing off, it will be fine because you will automatically leave the party and the key will be left behind.

Joining a party is a huge responsibility in Mabinogi. Don't just join one without any preparation. People will love to party with you if you come prepared and know the dos and don'ts.

Oh, also, I see someone who stole something from the Unofficial Mabinogi English Guide made a few years ago.  I will be reporting this as well. :)

not sure who is being pointed out with this but i will say for clarities sake my magic warrior/spell knight/rune knight is 100% written by me it took about two and a half hours of just typing and typing to finish it and i will not stand for someone telling me its plagiarism to be honest i had gotten logged out when i first pressed the post button and it made me log in and go to the post page again but with it blank and i nearly cried (luckily the back button put me back to MY guide and i was still able to post it). in either case all the quest information was studied in game (through many start-overs i might add)and the battle combo information is the combo system i created through my own diligence (and many many many MANY KOes) till i perfected a working system for fighting that i was comfortable in using.

    Thank you for reading this

    Brian "Royalflush"

p.s. Khenta i was not using a quote to single you out but only to point out that anyone who tries to say that my guide is stolen needs to be slapped around a bit because i put a lot into it and will definitely fight for its legitimacy.

p.s.s if you really really think mine or anyone else's guide is stolen go ahead and search for it anywhere you want on the internet BEFORE you post about it  as just posting about it will only cause an uproar of people backing unfounded claims because they think it will make their guide seem more credible or more likely to win(it would remove competition). long story short if you want to say something is stolen please provide proof not just claim an untruth. thank you

Items: A Thorough Look, Rev. 2 (entry 7)

Thanks for your patience, I have revised my FAQ with more information and a little spelling adjustment here and there.

This is revision two of the Custom FAQ written specifically for this contest, from scratch by me.

    Items: A Thorough Look

Hi. I'm Tolinar. Mabinogi is a world with a vast array of things to own. Let's look at some of them.

    ITEM BASICS
An ITEM is an object that can be picked up and held in the inventory. Items come in a few flavors.

This guide will teach primarily about Non-Cash Shop items.

You can see items on the ground by holding ALT, and the items in your inventory by pressing I. Items can be equipped, traded, given away, dropped on the ground, gifted to NPCs or even burned in a fire just by dragging the item where you want it to go. If you accidentally drop an item, or something you KO drops one, don't worry about someone else grabbing your item right away. Loot Guard prevents anyone from taking the item for a few seconds, so you have time to go get it yourself. But new Erinn anti-litter laws are in place, meaning any item left on the ground for an extended time will be erased!

    -- TYPES OF ITEMS --

EQUIPMENTS are items that can be applied to a character's equipment slots. There are several types of equipment.

USABLE ITEMS can be used from the inventory for an effect. There are subcategories of usable items, too.

SUPPLIES can be gathered for crafting and making other items. They can be very useful.

SKILL ITEMS are designed for use with a skill. Without that skill, the item is not very useful.

QUEST ITEMS should be collected to make progress on a quest. A common example is the Fomor Scroll.

MISCELLANEOUS items may be of use... I wonder how?

    About Equipments

The HEAD, LEFT and RIGHT HANDS, GLOVES, BODY, FEET, ACCESSORY and CAPE can all be equipped with one ITEM.

In addition, you can equip a second set of items for the LEFT and RIGHT hands. You can switch between this alternate set by pressing W or using the "I / II" switches on the inventory page, above the hand slots.

Some items will fill both Hand Slots. These items are said to be 2-HANDED And some will fill both hands, but can still allow you to hold certain types of items in your off hand. These are LOADABLE items. They include bows and instruments.

Most equipment has DURABILITY. When the equipment DURABILITY wears down to 0, it's useless and it needs to be repaired or sold, or burned.

Most equipment has proficiency, and can be UPGRADED. To upgrade an equipment, you must raise the proficiency. Then spend the proficiency, along with some gold, and an expert will make an item better! Who is the expert to improve your equipment, you ask? Think about who sold you the item, and who probably knows that item the very best.

If you are using an equipment and you are knocked out, you may end up DROPPING IT. But don't worry, no one can take it. Getting it back is just a matter of picking it up... but if the area is swarming with trouble, that can be easier said than done. A Town Hall should be able to give you your item back, but expect to pay for it. It can be pretty expensive. Also, those lost and founds can hold an item forever, but can only hold 20... so don't leave it to rot forever.

    EQUIPMENT TYPE: WEAPONS

WEAPONS are items designed to hurt the enemy. You can use weapons to improve your damage or change your style of attack.

Every weapon has several principle values. Balance, Minimum and Maximum Damage, added chance to critical, and added chance to wound are some common things on weapons. Weapons can be enchanted by an enchantment scroll, this will cause even more effects to be added to your character when you are holding the weapon. Enchantments vary greatly, so see what you can find.

If you are looking for a good weapon, check with a blacksmith. Remember to examine the Damage Range - the difference between minimum and maximum damages. Consider the price range, and whether the weapon suits your play style. Here's some info on notable weapons.

Daggers are great for getting the drop on enemies, they are quick weapons, but can lack damage. They are good as a secondary weapon for a player who uses, say a Bow or Magic. In a pinch you can switch to your dagger and rush the foe, and since a dagger is such a quick weapon, you will be more likely to hit first! You will also land a lot of Critical Hits with a dagger. If you focus on the "Critical Hit" skill, a dagger can be a lethal tool. Otherwise, you should probably rely on another weapon to do the bulk of your damage.

The Longsword is a slow weapon, but it still swings three times. Its damage is pretty good. This can be handy if you are used to hitting three times. You can use the pace of your hits to hold the enemy back, and get the extra damage.

The Two-Handed Sword is really.slow and it only hits twice, but it's a very powerful weapon. If you have spare money, you should consider one of these. It's probably the strongest weapon for pure damage in the game at this time, though people whisper of more powerful weapons on the way...

Bows are a whole 'nother class of weapon. They hit at a distance... but they might miss, too. Short bows are good, but they break quickly, and a Composite bow is considered a slower, but more damaging, type of bow.

Shields are special types of weapons. To use a shield, you must equip a 1-handed weapon. Then you can hold a shield in the off hand. Shields help with blocking arrows, making that dangerous type of foe less difficult, especially if you use the Defense skill. They will increase your overall defense and make you harder to knock down and hold back. If you have a free hand, you might consider a cheap one, or you could get a more expensive shield! Some tools can even be used as a shield... Though, this can be a waste if they get broken, and they aren't really as good for blocking.

Some tools and miscellaneous items can also be used as weapons. They may not be very effective, though.

There is a distant rumor that weapons can hold powerful spirits, called EGO spirits. Not much is known about this yet, but if you speak to the Ego Spirit in your starter sword, Eiry, she might be able to tell you a little bit.

    EQUIPMENT TYPE: TOOLS

TOOLS are items for your HANDS, specifically designed for a certain task. Various tasks and skills need a certain something to get it done right. In some cases a substitute could be used (You might shear a sheep with your sword... if you really HAD to... but it would get dull!) Usually you will want to have the right tool for the job. Tools can be bought at a variety of places...

A shearing dagger is a good idea for shearing sheep. Check with a blacksmith or a shepard to get one.

You'll need an Axe to cut wood, and a Gathering Axe works best. Any good blacksmith should have one.

To harvest wheat, grain, and other tall growing plants, you need a Sickle. Check with a blacksmith.

To gather a low-growing plant like a potato, you need a Weeding Hoe. The blacksmith may have it.

To milk a cow or get water from a water-source, you need an Empty Jar. Try checking a big-city variety store for one!

To use the Tailoring skill, you must have a Tailoring Kit. Try talking to a tailor or maybe an innkeeper (they tend to do a lot of sewing) A Tailoring Kit is LOADABLE, and you will need to load a BLUEPRINT for the item you want to make. Without a blueprint, you have no project to start!

To use the Potionmaking skill, will require a Potionmaking Kit, and you should check with a healer to get one of those.

To use the Play Instrument Skill, you must have an instrument. Any instrument will do, the skill works equally well with any instrument you can find. Instruments are LOADABLE with a music scroll, and you'll play the song written on it, but if you don't have a scroll, you will play whatever song is in your heart at the moment! Poetic, huh?

To use the Cooking skill, you must have one-or-more SPECIFIC tools for the recipe you want to make! You may need a cooking table, a chef's knife, a dough rolling pin, a pot, or more!

To use the Blacksmithing skill, you will need a Blacksmith's hammer. You also must be standing at a Blacksmith's Forge that is working. A Blacksmith hammer is LOADABLE and you will need a BLUEPRINT for the item you want to make. Without the blueprint, you don't have a project to make!

To spin Silk thread, you must have specially oiled Weaving gloves. They can't be repaired and wear out quickly. It's a very special tool that goes on your GLOVE slot, instead of held in the hand.

As the game progresses and new and exciting skills and tasks appear, expect there to be new tools to accompany them!

    EQUIPMENT TYPE: ARMORS and CLOTHING

Ah, the old question: Fashion or defense?

Tailored cloth tends to be somewhat giving, although it can look really stylish. However, a finely hammered piece of armor will be drab and metallic, but it might save your life.

The choice of which you prefer is yours. Cloth or armor can be applied to nearly every other slot on the character. Cloth comes in a wide variety of colors. That variety gets even bigger on Mondays! If you are looking for something colorful, remember the shops will carry new goods starting at midnight.

The two good qualities of armor are: It will keep you alive in some fights, and it wears out slowly. And it can also make you look tough. Yeah, that's three good qualities. Armor can be very expensive, but wearing a lot of armor may significantly reduce the damage you take, especially if you upgrade it.

About upgrades - once you upgrade an armor or clothing, it has been fitted custom for you, and you won't be able to trade it any more! Upgrade items you plan to keep a long, long time and keep them in good repair!

Expensive clothing and armor is a status symbol. Who can't help but stare at the dazzling chromatic metal and the rich, bold patterns and colors? Plus, it can be enchanted. A suit of enchanted clothing can seriously help your game!

    EQUIPMENT: ACCESSORIES?

Where are those accessories? They don't seem to be in the game yet! Rings, and pendants, and perfect accents... oh my. How could you get such fine items? Well, you might try doing something amazing, or you might recieve something like it on a very special occasion.

    About Usable Items

If you right-click some items, the word "USE" appears on the list! Usable items, how wonderful and useful. What are they good for? Well, you've got your FOOD, your POTIONS, your SCROLLS and BOOKS, and your ETC. ITEMS.

    USABLE ITEMS: FOOD

Eating is important in Mabinogi! You are given some bread early on. When you notice your stamina bar going totally black at one end, don't ignore it! You're hungry, and the best remedy is to eat! When you are hungry, your Stamina recovers slowly, and you will get tired easily. This is bad for work-day life and in combat as well.

You are given some loaves of bread by Nao when you start the game, but you don't need to eat them right away. Eating when you are full is a waste and you'll just get FAT. You can tell if you're hungry if part of your stamina meter is totally black. If half your meter is blackened, you are STARVING - eat soon! CTRL+K will eat a piece of food from your inventory, if you have one.

Eating can be good for you too. Eating well-cooked food can apply stat bonuses to your character for a time! And if the food's ... really, really good... well... you might be in for a surprise.

But even boring food is good for your body! The diet you choose to eat will improve certain stats over time. Just keep eating when you're hungry and eventually you will notice both your body shape changing, and your stats slowly growing! Awesome! These changes happen faster when you are young, so newbies should watch their diet carefully, or you'll end up like Lorna did that one time!

If you're hungry and you want a good meal, but can't afford to eat at a restaurant, you might try hitting bushes or trees and see if you can find BERRIES. They not only slim you down, but they raise a lot of stats! Your DEX and INT will improve. You might also try to get an EGG from a chicken, but these can make you kind-of fat, and if you get roughed around they could break. With a Weeding Hoe you can get POTATOES. Monsters may drop food when you defeat them - don't rats like CHEESE? And if you keep a sharp eye on nearby trees, maybe you can spot APPLES.

Of course, if your friend is offering you a fine Fruit Salad and you need a meal, you would be silly to refuse! Even a Cheese Bread is better than going hungry, and these foods can raise your stats permanently too! If you never want to go hungry again, master the COOKING skill or get to know some skilled chefs!

Just be careful not to get fat!

    USABLE ITEMS: POTIONS

Let's face it. A life of combat is rough. You will be battered, exhausted, downright spent at the end of the day.

And sometimes, you'll feel like that, right in the middle of it. What to do?

Potions can instantly recover your worn-down stats. Drinking a potion will recover your HP, MP, or STAMINA. Type 'H' at any time to drink a HP Potion. 'J' will put back an MP potion. And 'K' will drink a stamina potion!

Potions come in varying strengths. There's 10, 30, and 50 recovery potions. You can even make stronger potions if you're talented at potion making. The potion making skill uses herbs to make potions, by using a potion making kit. Those herbs can be found all around some dungeons.

Although the boost from a potion is a great way to get the edge in a fight, you should be cautious of overusing them!  Potion sickness will strongly reduce your stats, and make you pathetic in combat! If you get potion-sick, you'll have no choice but to wait for the effects to wear off or visit a physician, so use with prudence!

    USABLE ITEMS: SCROLLS AND BOOKS

Scrolls and books can be read... sort of.

Some scrolls are inscribed with music. If you can read Mabinogi-music, you might read a scroll to see what it says. (hmm. I wonder if anyone could ever really understand a song just by reading the MML.)

Other scrolls are inscribed with MAGIC. These are enchantment scrolls. Right-clicking them and selecting "USE" will attempt to apply them to an equipment of your choice. It might succeed... giving your equip a powerful magic. Or it might fail... and seriously damage the equipment, destroying itself in the process. If you know the enchanting skill and you have some Magic Powder, you might be able to preserve an enchantment scroll even through a failure, but you can bet that equipment you want to enchant will still get ripped up if you make a mistake. So it's better to try to enchant something early. Nothing is as sad as breaking a weapon you're really familiar with, just because you messed up an enchantment.

Reading BOOKS can be especially beneficial! By reading, you can advance your skills or learn new ones. Reading can also reveal some secrets of the game, or make you more familiar with parts of the game world. If you try to read a book and it says something like "The page you are trying to visit cannot be found" - then that book hasn't been written yet. Just wait a litlte bit and try again later to read it =P Some books can even raise your stats! To get a benefit from a book, try to do Advanced Reading. If you succeed, your character will advance!

FOMOR SCROLLS are actually QUEST ITEMS. They are scrolls poisoned with Dark Magic, used to control the wild creatures and beings that become the evil followers of Fomor. You can't read them, and even if you could, you wouldn't want to. They are NOT usable.

    USABLE ITEMS: ETC. ITEMS

There are a few other general usable items! They may be odd, but they can be really useful! Don't neglect them!

Phoenix Feathers revive downed teammates and other players. Use the feather, then click  on the dead player with the feather above his head (who is waiting to be brought back to life) When you use a Phoenix Feather, two good things happen: 1 - The person you revive doesn't lose any experience at all, and 2 - You GAIN experience! You can level up by reviving fallen players! The stronger the player you save, the more EXP you will get. Teamwork FTW.

Holy Water is handy for preserving good items. Since all equipment loses durability, Holy Water can be invaluable. Holy Water will make your gear Blessed, so the durability lasts longer! Also note, the equipment will also not be dropped should you fall in battle. This can prevent costly losses. But you generally can't buy holy water from any store. What to do? You might try working part-time for a church!

Wings can take you back to the last town you just visited. Please note, they do not take you to any one specific town... but the town you  visited last. Wings do NOT record a specific town! Please avoid this common newbie mistake! If you buy a wing in Tir Chonail, and you go into Dun Barton to do some things, and then try to wing back to Tir Chonail... you will waste your wing and won't go anywhere -- because your wing changed to Dun Barton the moment you stepped into the town! Use Wings to return to town quickly when the field or dungeon is playing a bit too roughly - discretion is the better part of valor - or when you are loaded up with goods, or finished doing what you were doing.

Rumors spread of Elemental materials that might make your weapon take on a new elemental attribute. Can you find it?

Who knows what other usable items you might stumble upon in Mabinogi? The game is seemingly without limits! When all else fails, try reading the item description to figure out how it's used.

    About Supplies

Who knows how you might stumble across these. Perhaps a few cobwebs strewn on the ground... A goblin drops a piece of leather... an herb in a treasure chest. What are they? Are they all just junk? No...

    They are SUPPLIES for crafting!

Supplies break down into specific skill categories: Weaving, Tailoring, Refining, Blacksmithing, Cooking, Enchanting, Potion Making.

    SUPPLIES: WEAVING

Raw Weaving supplies include Cobwebs, Leather, and Wool.

Complex Weaving supplies include Fine Silk Thread and Coarse wool thread.

Cobwebs are gathered from spiders. Watch some spiders, and keep your distance, if a spider is alerted to you he won't make cobwebs. White ones are easily distracted and other spiders may attack you... Once the spider has spun some cobwebs, run up and grab them, then try to get away without being noticed. Cobwebs can be spun into fine silk thread, a complex weaving supply.

Wool can be sheared from sheeps. As long as the sheep doesn't move, wool gathering is 100% successful. You just need an edge to do it with, and a shearing dagger is best. Wool spins down into Coarse wool thread, a weaving supply.

Leather must be cut, with a blade. Leather can be gathered from goblins and other monsters. Try Ciar Dungeon if you need leather - Ciar Beginner if you are just starting. Leather can be cut into Leather Straps, a Tailoring and Blacksmithing supply.

Fine Silk thread is obtained by weaving. You need special gloves to spin the silk, an unusual tool. This can be spun into varying qualities of silk fabric, a tailoring supply.

Coarse thread is obtained by weaving. You can make various grades of cloth, a tailoring supply.

Braids can also be weaved, They are a blacksmithing and tailoring supply.

    SUPPLIES: TAILORING

Tailoring requires various amounts of Silk and Cloth, as well as various qualities. You can get these through weaving.

In addition, finishing threads are a Tailoring supply that put the finishing touches on an item.

More complex patterns may have surprising needs.

    SUPPLIES: REFINING

Raw ore is the stuff of Refining. Copper, Steel, Silver and Gold.

These ores are smelted down into Ingots, and plates, the core supply for Blacksmithing.

    SUPPLIES: BLACKSMITHING

Blacksmithing uses the plates and ingots from refining. The finishing items really vary, from firewood for handles to weaving and tailoring supplies for hilts and cloth parts, and any number of other elements.

    SUPPLIES: COOKING

Cooking uses a number of supplies like salt, pepper, oil, flour, and other things that can't be eaten raw, but you can get at a grocery store and you can cook good things with. What specific items do you need? Well, maybe you should find a recipe! I've even heard you may have to cook an ingredient up, then use that ingredient to make a better dish!

    SUPPLIES: ENCHANTING

Enchanting uses the Magic Powders that you occasionally find. That is the main supply, as well as Enchantment Scrolls.

    SUPPLIES: POTION MAKING

Various types of Herbs are used by Potion Making, as well as Base Potion. Base Potion is available at most healers' houses, but you will need Herbs to brew up anything really good.

    SKILL ITEMS

Some skills, mundane or amazing, need an item to be used. It seems like the material exists, just to be used for the skill.. they go hand in hand, don't they?

To make a fire using the Campfire skill, you'll need Firewood. Try using a gathering Axe on a tree.

To use first aid, you're going to need Bandages. The skill can remove wounds. You can buy them from a healer's house... but maybe there is another way to make Bandages, if you search long and hard.

To use the Compose skill and write a piece of music for an instrument, you need a Music Scroll. Check at a general store.

To use Ranged attacks, you'll need Arrows. Try a blacksmith.

    Simple!

    About Quest Items

Quest items come in a few different types. Some are QUEST SCROLLS, some are COLLECTION items, others are KEY items, and a few are PASS items.

    QUEST ITEMS: QUEST SCROLLS

These items can be bought from various merchants. Every quest scroll has a mission. Simply having the scroll is enough for collection scrolls. If you are using a Party scroll, you must set it to be the current Party Quest. It's easily done through the Party Menu. When the quest is complete, use the Quest Screen to cash it in, just like any other quest. The scroll will vanish, and you get your reward. Fabulous! Some quests have a time limit, so be aware.

    QUEST ITEMS: COLLECTION ITEMS

Various items can be collected up and turned in for quest rewards!

Fomor scrolls are the most common type of collection item. Kill the monsters, get the scrolls, turn them in. Way to cleanse the world of evil! You must find an NPC selling a Quest Scroll for the particular type of Fomor Scroll you have collected. You need a bunch of a single type - a little of everything won't do at all.

Gems of varying sizes and colors can be turned in from a Quest scroll. What else could they be used for? I wonder.

Nails might be useful for Part-Time jobs, if you should find some.

    QUEST ITEMS: KEY ITEMS

You might find this at the end of a dungeon, in a chest.Or maybe an NPC has it. There's really only one thing to do with it - the story makes it so obvious what it is used for! The effort, the item, and the completion. Oh, yes. It's so familiar. Many part-time jobs will have you ferrying Key Items around. Lots of Quest dungeons will end with a Key Item.

    QUEST ITEMS: PASS ITEMS

Pass items are one of the coolest type of Quest item. Used on the correct dungeon altar, you gain access to a special place. You might get a quest Pass from an NPC. This will let you into a special dungeon. These tend to have more money, and be better places to play in - but you usually just get to go once! You can also get beginner passes to make a dungeon easier. Ask Trefor for Beginner passes to Alby. Ranald will have Beginner passes to Ciar. But these aren't the only type of Pass you can find! Be wary, though. With the exception of the Beginner pass, the Passes represent a challenge. Even if the pass says "Basic Fomor Pass" - that's still a special challenge, a dungeon riddled with evil! I recommend; Don't go alone into a Special Pass dungeon. Share your good luck and the challenge with friends or other players! This will not only spread happiness, but it might make it easier to survive a very tough situation. Definitely, don't just wander in because you got the pass from some spider! Pass dungeons can be fun, but they can also be really hard! Challenge passes expire after a few hours, so muster the stout and make an attempt while time remains!

    MISCELLANEOUS ITEMS

Sometimes in Mabinogi you will find something that doesn't make any sense.

A dried up fish bone... what is it? Maybe someone failed really badly at cooking. Can you eat it? You probably shouldn't. What use can a broken egg be, anyway?

A giant potato, golden apple, or golden egg - my, how lucky. But should you eat it, or sell it? Or what?

But part of the great fun of Mabinogi is figuring out the puzzle! What is this fantastic item? How is it used? Is an NPC looking for it? Or did a player drop it because they didn't want it? This list sure isn't exhaustive, by any means! An apple is an apple - unless it's an orange? As new worlds open up, new items will come with them in every shape and size.

    OTHER ITEM FACTS

    Here's some item oddities.

Item colors come in a variety, even if you can't equip that item. Talk about sense of style; I wonder if anyone has a color-coordinated inventory!

Some books can be equipped. Fancy that. You're a scholar! It doesn't seem to do anything, but it does make you look smart!

Robes can be worn in the Cape Slot, and you can put the hood up or down.

Cash Shop items are rumored to do amazing things, and could be a lot more powerful than a mundane item - or something wild and totally different!

Almost any item in the game can be BURNED for EXP, if you don't want it any more. You may not get much, but as your level rises, it increases your EXP gain from burning things.

    AND WHAT ELSE...

    oh yes, GOLD.

You can hold 1000 gold per slot in your inventory, or up to 10,000 in a 2x2 wallet item.

And what could you possibly use that gold for?

BUYING ALL THE OTHER ITEMS IN THIS GUIDE, of course!

Good luck with your fantasy life!

I will take care of this tomorrow.  You will hear about it. :)

Oh, also, I see someone who stole something from the Unofficial Mabinogi English Guide made a few years ago.  I will be reporting this as well. :)

p.s. Khenta i was not using a quote to single you out but only to point out that anyone who tries to say that my guide is stolen needs to be slapped around a bit because i put a lot into it and will definitely fight for its legitimacy.

p.s.s if you really really think mine or anyone else's guide is stolen go ahead and search for it anywhere you want on the internet BEFORE you post about it  as just posting about it will only cause an uproar of people backing unfounded claims because they think it will make their guide seem more credible or more likely to win(it would remove competition). long story short if you want to say something is stolen please provide proof not just claim an untruth. thank you

go ahead and search for mine as well; you will find it on both Mabinogi Player and Mabinogi Guru - and its pretty obvious that i also posted both of those guides.

Counter Strategy for Skeletons in Rabbie Normal

My Counter Strategy For Skeletons When Soloing Rabbie Normal

This guide is for people getting killed by skeletons in Rabbie because you either don't know the exact timing for normal attack or you're experiencing a little bit of lag and it's causing you to chase the skeletons around the room until you exchange blows with them. My method is safer and takes longer than using normal attack.

    1.  Start with counter.
      • When you enter the room, go to the center of the room and wait for a skeleton to target you (you will see !! above the skeletons head) and immediately activate counter.
        • To always try to be in the center of the room is important because of two things:
          1. If you counter and you're close to a wall you will have to react faster if the skeleton lands right next to you and for example, uses smash. It's easier to react when you don't have to run around.
          2. When facing red/metal skeletons they can take out their bows if you're too far away from them. When you defeat the first skeleton, another skeleton will target you. If that skeleton is on the other side of the room, it will probably take out its bow. To prevent this, it's important to be in the center of the group of skeletons (which is normally the center of the room).
      • If you at any time find yourself fighting a skeleton with a bow, run away from it and activate a bolt. Then shoot and use normal attack or shoot another bolt and counter. If you don't have a magic bolt or bow, run to the skeleton with normal attack and hope for the best (or if you're in an open room just run into the hall.)
    2. Wait for the skeleton to act.
      • You will end up with one of four scenarios here. The skeleton could be using:
        1. Normal attack. (No skill bubble over the skeleton's head.)
        2. Defense. (The skeleton walks slowly)
        3. Counter. (The skeleton suddenly stops)
        4. Smash. (The skeleton keeps running with the skill/sometimes stops immediately)
      • There's another difference between 3 and 4 and that is: counter takes 1.5 seconds and smash takes 2 seconds to load. You will notice if the skeleton is using smash that it takes a bit longer to activate.
      • Here's how to react to the skeleton's actions:
        1. Normal attack: Just wait until the skeletons attacks you and you'll counter successfully and the skeleton will be knocked back.
        2. Defense: Either cancel counter, wait out the skeleton's skill and activate counter again, or use smash (recommended):
          • If the skeleton is close to a wall, position yourself so that you will smash it away from you.
        3. Counter: Either cancel counter, wait out the skeleton's skill and activate counter again, or use windmill:
          • If you choose to use windmill here, just activate counter again immediately after and the timing will be just right.
        4. Smash: Just wait until the skeleton smashes you and you'll counter successfully. Or cancel counter and use normal attack:
          • Canceling counter to use normal attack is risky because the skeleton will be quite close and you'll have to be quick.
    3. Wait for the skeleton to act. (skeleton is down from your counter). Don't activate counter just yet.
      • You will end up with one of three (four for metal skeletons) scenarios here.
        1. Normal attack. (There is no skill bubble as the skeleton is being knocked down.)
        2. Defense/Counter (Skills take 1.5 seconds to load.)
        3. Smash. (Skill takes 2 seconds to load and the skeleton will start running toward you when the skeleton is on its feet again.)
        4. Windmill (Skill takes 1 second to load.)
      • For 2: It will deactivate the skill soon after, so there's no time to activate smash or windmill. Nothing much to do here but wait it out.
      • How to react:
        1. Normal attack: Wait for the skeleton to get on its feet and start running toward you. Activate counter now. This delay is to save stamina (the skeleton won't run directly to you, it will first stop on a point on a circle around you).
          • If the skeleton starts using a skill instead of attacking you normally, go back to B.
        2. Defense/Counter: Wait for the skeleton to deactivate its skill and start running toward you. Activate counter.
        3. Smash: Use normal attack:
          • If the skeleton is close to a wall, retreat a few steps before you attack so that you won't run to the wall and end up being too close to the skeleton and too far from the center of the room when the skeleton is down.
        4. Windmill: Now you should use a magic bolt, then counter immediately after. If you don't have a bolt skill, just wait until the skill is deactivated and activate counter again. When countering, the skeleton lands just far enough away from you to be able to load counter after a bolt, and not far enough to take out its bow, so it's a perfect range.

WIL= Effect Crit rate, and orrurance of Deadly status

INT= Effects damage and balance of magic spells.

LUC= Effect Crit rate, Drop rate and Lucky strike.

    Other stats

Crit rate = Chance of landing a critical hit, Max is around 30% Even if it is higher than 30%.  The rest goes toward negating an enemies Protection/defence.

Balance= Average damage between the max and min damage.  an example at 50% balance and your damage is 1-100 your normal hit will be from 45-55dmg.

Protection =  10 of damage negated after calculationg defence.  Also 2x protection is your resistance to crits. 10% protection lowers an enemies chance to Crit you by 20%. Durring defencive stance add the protection to your current protection.

Defence = Damage reduction.  20defence negates any hit for 21dmg or lower, instead you get hit for 1. When in defencive stance add the Stance bonus to your current Defence.

min/max damage= the ammount you hit for before calculating balance or the enemies defence/protection.

    # of hits= The number of consecutive swings allowed on average.  (Using a 3 hit weapon does not garuntee 3 hits, and using a 2 hit weapon does not limit you to 2 hits.  3 hit weapons CAN hit for up to 5 hits, but you must figure the pattern for yourself it is VERY hard to explain.)

Proficiency = Experience/level of a weapon/armor.  Used like Points to purchase modifications.  When a modification is purchased you will lose that ammount of proficiency. Proficiency caps at 100 (100.0%).

    Combat and Strategy

The combat in Mabinogi is NOT real time.  It is turn based.  Please remember this.

    Basic Combinations =

    1.  Melee ---> Defend

    2.  Melee --> counter attack

    3. Counter attack ----> Defend

    4. Counter attack ---> Firebolt

    5. Icebolt/Lightning ---> Melee

(do note you can use any of these sequences together, for example combo 1 followed by combo 2, followed by combo 3.  You can never double counter attack unless the enemy is doing something else.)

Lets go over our "Rock paper scissors".   Smash>Defend>Melee>Smash  Also, Counter stops all single target melee, Whirlwind/Magic stops counter.  Most normal enemies dont use a whirlwind attack. Ratmen do.  So counter is pretty safe. While we on it, lets discuss the skills indivudually.

Defend= Raises Defence and protection level.  Minimum dmg done is still 1, and a Crit will still hurt.

Counter attack = Negates all normal single target melee attacks and reflects a percentage back at the enemy.  Long reuse time, i dont recommend double counter attack.

Windmill =  Area attack, will break Counter attack, user is immune to dmg for a very breif period, also loses 10% of his HP, Can still use in deadly status and will NOT kill the user if his HP is low.  Used primarily to hold back incoming attackers for the formation known as Windmill wall, and the boss destroyer formation known as Smashmill.

Melee =  Normal attack, Read your weapon it tells you your average ammount of swings per round with your weapon.  Note that hammers, and axes are the easiest to do 50% more damage,  for example, swing once, wait untill your foot moves back into position and swing 2 more times.  Only available in the Manual battle configuration and only advisable to veteran players.  Bad timing leads to death.

Bow = Ranged attack, at lower ranks it is unadvisable to use this as your main damage.  Aim times are very long in comparison to melee and the time to change your "Stance" to defend will leave you vulnerable.  Groups of archers can destory must stronger enemies because of the knockback effect.  Arrows also cause LARGE wounding damage.  Meaning enemies and players cannot readily heal themselves from the damage incurred.

Magic= At low ranks the "effects" of magic are more important than the damage.  Ice stuns for the equivilant of 1 round, lightning stuns for 1.5-2 rounds.  Fire has a knockback effect.  Knowing this using a single icebolt will break an enemies counter attack stance.  Firebolt can knockback enemies so you can prepare other skills, and lightning not only stuns but has an area effect, the damage is dramatically lowered with higher charges.  But if you are surrounded by other mages charging lightning you can "Use" their charges.  For example if you charge 1 lightning bolt and your teamate has 5 charged, if you are close together when you shoot your 1 bolt it will hit multiple targes as if you charged it 5x but have the dmg of a single charged bolt.

    Timing

Since this is a turn based system i will explain further.  Melee is considered .75 of a turn.  Counter attack is 1 complete turn.  Defend is .75 a turn. Magic is 1 turn. (.75 at higher ranks). a potion is .25 of a turn.

Knockback is 1 turn, stun by lightning is 1.5 turns.  Windmill is 1 turn.

Melee ---> counter attack = 1.75 turns.  for the person you are attacking, the melee inflicted and knock back takes 1.75 turns, so as long as they dont hit a wall you will already be in your counter attack stance.  You may start any skill after attack your last swing of your combo.  Or better to say DURING your last swing.  This method is most common.  Counter attack---> counter attack takes 2 turns, but the enemy still only takes 1.75 turns to retaliate.  Bad news unless he tries to use a skill.

Always defending or always using counter attack are dangerous.  You still take damage with defend, and counterattack eats Stamina.  Using only one of these will surely kill you.  Taking note of an enemies actions also will prove helpful.  If you are low health and an enemy uses defend or counter attack, it is a perfect time to drink some HP potions and return to your defend stance.

    Enemies

The AI in mabinogi allows for 1v1 combat.  Do remember the limitations.  1v1 means 1 player vs 1 TYPE of enemy.  So you vs 1 kobold is fine, no other KOBOLDS will interfere, but a kobold archer will, or a poison kobold, or a young kobold.  Because they are diffrent types.  When their are rooms like this it is known as a "Mixed" room.  The same can be said outdoors.  Fighting a White dire wolf, you are still able to be attacked by a White dire wolf cub.  Thier is one other note to add, if you attack a diffrent enemy other than the one that is attacking you, those rules do not apply.  But only targeted attacks count.  If you are using windmill or a 2hander the splash damage does not apply, just the damage to the enemie you targeted.

Very few enemies Bluff, again, ratmen do.  Spiders only defend, they have no smash or counter.  Wolves counter smash and defend.  Easy to detect.  As most enemies when defending they circle you but do not advance.  When smashing they run straight for you.  And of course when countering they do not move.  Skeletons (are annoying).  In 90% of cases they are countering.  They use defend to move closer, and return to counter again.  They will smash but not as often as counter.  Having an icebolt or firebolt handy will work wonders.  They are also one of the safest enemies to fight since they do not have a high crit rate and you can freely defend or counter without much hassle.

    Do's and Don'ts

as much as you love your friends in Mabinogi, do not help them in battle.  The turn based system is not revolving around You, but around the enemy you are fighting.  Which means, if you try to help your friend, the enemy can now attack you, And your friend all in 1 round.  And also it can cause worse confusion.  Earlier i explained the 1 on 1 system.  Well if you hurt an enemy that your friend is in combat with, it is no longer fighting your friend.  Which means somethingi else is free to attack him/her.  So as he's trying to attack, a new enemy is already runing up to hit them.  Also the number of attacks on an enemy is constant.  If you hit it once with your 2hander and your friend joins in, he will only get 1 swing and knock the enemy back.  Leaving you both unprepared and vulnerable while the enemy is already coming to attack.

If you cannot kill an enemy on your own you should practice on things that are weaker to hone your skills.  If your are around lvl 17-20 with some form or armor i suggest practicing with grey wolves. they use all forms of attack with the exception of windmill/magic.  They are very fast so it will help you with reaction times.  When you can kill 10 of these in a row without potions or stopping to heal you are all set to do any dungeon you like.

    Boss: Methods

Methods for most bosses are simple.  Stop them from being able to attack.  Smash has a 1 round animation, and a 1 round knockdown.  Used in sequence it can easily defeat most Bosses that do not have auto guard or counter attack.

Smashmill, Alternating with smash and windmill Negate the "timing"  Since windmill acts independantly of the "round timer".  You can consistantly keep the boss grounded.

Windmill wall, pinning the boss (or enemies) in a confined space with windmill while ranged attackers keep them knocked back, usually with archers but sometimes done with firebolt.  ALOT less reliable but effective if thats all you have.

Ogres, Personally i find it easier to take them on one at a time unless you have a full party ready to take on one of these guys.  The heavy stander poses a huge problem for the normal methods of fighting.  By one at a time i mean send in 1 person to counter/firebolt until they die, rez them and fix them up, let another person have a try at it.  Usually by the 4th person these bad guys are down.  Most i've ever done is 75% of their health in 1 fight with an ogre(warrior).  I died do to lack of Stamina and MP.   Hell hounds are by far the easiest of the harder dungeons.  Treat them exactly as a Wolf, but they have spells.  If you see the fireball by his side like a mage just melee him.  Other than that, they are big puppies.  But as a group all 3 can be very dangerous.

     ****NOTES****

All information is from experience and research.  I am not a devolper so i cannot garuntee numbers to be 100% accurate.

This guide is to inform, please remember that Mabinogi is an evolving game, things will change and this guide will become inaccurate over time.

If you can't get the hang of fighting, practice.  No one will ever be angry if your trying to get better.

    Most importantly, have fun!

    Re: Guidance Goodness! Event Guidelines

Guide to Composing and the Compose Skill (my experience in Mabinogi is the P-OB and OB, I've never played another version, but I learned fast) under the skill category.  IGN Haphtoo.  I may post this again after the patch is finished with updated material (right now I only have data from OB) because I'm not sure how far the skills will progress in G1S1.  All of this guide I wrote myself (credits at the bottom). I did not copy and paste from another website. -looks at other posts suspiciously- *cough* mabinogiworld.com/wiki *cough*

Welcome to Haphtoo's Guide to Composing and the Compose Skill.  An updated version will always be available at projectelite.freeforums.org.

Ok, I don't know how much about music everyone knows so I'll start off with some definitions that are vital.

    Definitions

Tempo: Also known as beats per minute - this determines how fast your song plays.
Octave: An octave is a range of 8 notes(not including sharp notes). Octaves run from c to b.
    example on a key board...
    | c# d# f# g# a# | the sharp notes are the black keys
    |c  d  ef  g  a  b| the normal notes are the white keys
    |<--one-octave--->|
Bar: also known as measure - a period of beats as defined by the time
    (3/4, 4/4, 5/8, 6/8, 7/8, 8/8 )
Whole note:a note that runs for a whole "bar"
half note:a note that run for half the length of a whole note
quarter note:a note that run for one quarter of a bar
eigth note:a note that run for one eigth of a bar

you get the idea by now I hope, if you don't look at a ruler with inches on it.

dotted note:a note that runs for 1 and ahlf times it's original length. ex. whole note dotted would run for the length of a whole note plus a half note

Now that I've finished with those, I'll go over the notation for mml(music markup language) which is what you have to write your music in for mabinogi.

    Notation

t : tempo - type [t] and then a number No to set the tempo (default is 120 - range is 1 to 255)
v : volume - type [v] and then a number No to set the volume (default is 8 - range is 0 to 15)
o : octave - type Time and then a number No to set the octave range (default is o4 - range is 1 to 7)
l : length - type [l] and then a number No to change the default note length (default is 4, range is 1 and up only whole numbers)
    > : octave up - type [>] to increase the current octave range by one
< : octave down - type [<] to decrease the current octave range by one
. : dotted note - type [.] to increase the previous note by half it's length
+, # : sharp note - type [+] or [#] to make a note sharp (up one step)
-, _ : flat note - type [-] or [_] to make anote flat (down one step)
    a, b, c, d, e, f, g : notes - type a letter between Angel and Gift to write a note

    Now for the actual writing.

    Written Guide

In mabinogi, you have three lines you can write on.
In the longest one(melody), this is where you input the tempo for the song. You do not need to put the tempo in the harmonies because it automatically carries over. You only type in a different tempo if you really know what you're doing(ex. melody t180, harmony t90 would match beats). Also, if you're recreating a song by ear, this is usually the line for the vocals or the lead guitar if there's no vocals.
Harmony1 is usually used for the lead guitar or the backup guitar if there's no vocals.
Harmony2 is usually the bass line.
None of that is set in stone. No matter what it sounds like, if I'm done writting a song and Harmony2 is longer than Harmony1, I switch them. A computer doesn't care what notes go where, as long as they all fit, it'll work right.
You also don't need to confine everything from one instrument on one line. If there's a lot of whole note rests in the melody, try to fill it in with notes from harmony1 or harmony2. This will usually reduce the rank of the song by 1 or 2 ranks and will sometimes make it just fit if you wrote it to be way to long.

Everything takes practice and this takes quite a bit, but as you go along don't just stay to the music you like. Despite how good they sound, a lot of rock/pop/etc. music is rather dull to compose because they use a lot of power chords and not very much creativity. Once you get to know how to compose fairly easily, try stuff that's not normal for you and you might find yourself appreciating stuff like beethoven's fifth or somethign by vivaldi or bach. other good music for practicing the hard stuff would be anime background music, or any background music for movies(ie. POTC, LOTR,

    etc.)
It can be a big challenge to write mml for mabinogi that mimics orchestras(there's usually 15 or more channels for orchestra music and only 3 in mabinogi) so if you get stuck with too much code even for the currently highest rank of composing, I've compiled a few tips to shortening the code.(An updated version can be found on my guild's website – projectelite.freeforums.org)

    Tips

o5co4 or >c< for the one note in the upper octave,  you can type b+ or b#. This reduces the code from 5 or 3 characters to 2 characters. It's a small change but could mean the difference between the rank you have the AP for and the next one up.

Never type the & sign between rests. You won't hear the difference between " Rest... and continue to rest" versus "Rest... and Rest again." Either way, there's no sound.

If your harmony comes in late and you have to type a lot of rests at the beginning... you could reduce it to l1rrrr, or your could change it to [l1.].
That changes l1rrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr to l1.rrrrrrrrrrrrrr (21 empty bars reduces the number from 23 characters to 17 characters.) This becomes more effective when you need to use more rests.

Use discresion, but when you see a song that has notes that are almost a 4th note, but not quite and have a tiny rest between it and the next note, just ignore the rest and type the 4th note. if you don't you might have to type something like d8&d16&d32&d64r64

another tip relating to the one above is that if you have d8&d16&d32&d64 you could alternately type it as d8.&d32. its considerably shorter

    Musical Theory

In this last section I will attempt to explain why you should get the Musical theory skill to accompany the

    Compose Skill.

The first advantage to musical theory is that you get 5 intelligence bonus for every rank you upgrade.  Since rank 6 is available ( at least in other versions) that means a total boost of 50 Intelligence.  This is such a great advantage because it only costs one AP per rank until rank 9 at which point it costs 2AP per rank.  It's a very cheap way of getting Intelligence (at least where AP is concerned, the skill itself costs quite a bit of gold). The second advantage of musical theory is that the difficulty of the scrolls you compose is raised.  Yes, this is the answer to all the musicians questions I've heard in game.  They all ask, “How do I play more difficult music?” They then proceed to play for me a piece of music that in real life would be very difficult(ex. Through the Fire and Flames by Dragonforce).  The level of difficulty of your scrolls is determined by the musical knowledge rank of the person that composes them. Upgrading Music theory also unlocks more default music for your music playing skill.

In retrospect, all I can say after telling you this is practice. Practice practice practice. The more you write the better you get. Rome wasn't built in a day and the Roman colliseum wasn't built by a begginer, but it's the efforts of everyone that makes it an empire.

    Re: Guidance Goodness! Event Guidelines

Oks first of all I write good english just that i dont want too =P.

This game was written by me "I didnt copy pasted from any other site but they serve me to find info I didnt knew".

So after that here we go =D.

Okay I'll start when you first enter the game, Nao appears she gives you a very good explanation on what you want to know for every newbie.

After the scene is done You will get a quest and go to the chief of Tir Chonail.

He then will then explain you how to complete quest. After you hear all the blablabla, You open the Quest tab by locating it in the inferior part of your screen, or you can as Well click Q.

When u open the Tab you will see the complete button in a yellow color. Click it xD there ya go! you just gained a level =).

Each time you get a level in this game you will get AP and other stats such as str, dex, luck, will, hp, mp, stamina hope i didnt miss something.

     STATS

Ap its important since its for upgrading your skills. I will explain that later on.

Str determines your damage when using melee weapons, such as swords, blunts, sticks =D (stick its blunt i know >.>)

Dex determines your damage when using Range weapons and Balance along with melee weapons.

Luck determines the chance of getting those incredible lucky's Big lucky's and Huge lucky's. Higher drop rate from mobs and increase in critical rate. When u get a huge lucky over 2000 gold you gained the lucky guy title. ill explain titles later too =D.

Will its something good to have xD, since that keeps you alive after your hp reaches negative, you will go into deadly state, this will give you chance to, own the mob! xD, Run for ur life! or simple die. ( you can do other things too not necessarily does I wrote). Will increases your critical rate too.

Hp Omg i doubt this doesnt needs much explanation, this are hitpoints when they reach 0 in this game you die unless your will keeps you alive.

Mp ahhhh mp yes this one its for casting magic spells that ill explain later too.

Stamina yes one very important status too, You can do anything without stamina except sit down and regain it =), When your stamina reaches 0 you will not be able to do any gathering job, you will not be able to hit an enemy succesfully meaning less damage.

I think this is pretty much you need to know about stats.

     QUESTS.

This dont really need much explanation since the game expresses very good itself already you even get an arrow telling you where to go.

Again you can always open the Q menu to see what you need

    COMBAT SYSTEM

Haaaa.... ye.... Combat system, Since you start playing you will notice that this game you need actually more than clicking to win a fight.

    Here come skills =).

In this game you take turns of attacking After you attack the mob he will attack you back unless you 1hit ko him. =) ( again mobs have will to so watch out dont turn your back)

The normal strategy to win a fight its attack, Defend immediately, Dont use regular attack if the mob its defending, use smash =).

Explaining the combat strategy it is kinda useless since everyone fights how he wants, as you keep leveling up you will see mobs fight differently so you will need to find a strategy to beat em.

    Here are some examples.

Metal skeleton: This one its pretty powerful, All you need for this its counter, If you defend hehe.... hope you get a really good shield, After you counter the skeleton will fall down immediately cast Icebolt or some skill that will give you time again to counter, like windmill, If you got bad luck and the skeleton takes out his bow, run back and cast a range spell as fast as you can, this will cancel the range mode of skeleton and will return again to melee mode. This mob uses, counter, Windmill, Melee attacks, Range attacks, Smash. As you see lots of skills and each hit its deadly.

Red fox: hehe....u kidding me, just hit him xD and it will die, Smash if it defends.

As you see theres different kind of mob with different skills, you will have to find out I dont wanna ruin the fun =).

After done with this lets pass to Skills.

    SKILLS

Combat mastery: This one increases melee damage along with hp and balance when using melee weapons. All characters starts out with this skill so no need to worry, w00t! you just got a skill in no time see how pro you are xD.

Since I dont wanna write all the stuff this skill does here is a very good page =) credits to wiki. (http://mabinogiworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Combat_Mastery)

Counterattack: This one well it counters the enemy attack!!! yes you hear it right xD im a genious huh?

You obtain this skill by, Completing the Malcom's ring quest, Talking to dillys about skills or attacking a mob that is using counterattack.

Here is all the info again credits to wiki xD (http://mabinogiworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Counterattack)

Smash: humm ye you would definitely like to rank This one to F at least.

This skills penetrates the enemys defense at rank F with 200% of your attack.

Obtain this skill by talking to Trefor.

hehe again here Ya go (http://mabinogiworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Smash)

Defense: Ohh ye you need this doesnt matter what are you going to be, range or melee. At least Rank to F.

This skill humm it defends you hehe, From an enemy attack unless he is using smash. note just one attack.

Windmill: Ohhh yes, You want to be a warrior? this is a must! Windmill is so good that theres no words to explain it xD.

It attacks all surrounding enemys, Damage varies depending on the Rank of the skill. Range increases at lvl 5 and at lvl 1.

Final hit: This skill hasnt been release in the English version hope we get it in this patch, Since i have no knowledge about this skill. Here goes the page. (http://mabinogiworld.com/wiki/index.php?title=Final_Hit)

Thats it for Combat mastery, im not a bowman so I cant explain the skills since i havent try them myself you can as well look up in the wiki page.

I'll pass now to Part-time Jobs.

Part time jobs: weee!! this ones are an easy but boring way to get money in the game. Tough its the best option for a newbie.

Here is the list of part time jobs and the times.

    Tir Chonail.

NPC               start time    report time  end time

    Dylis               6:00 AM     9:00 AM     3:00 AM

    Parties & Dungeons: Why party?

Many dungeons require you to be in a party. At least they are a lot easier to finish with a party. But why be in a party if you don't have to? You would be getting more experience by killing the monsters by yourself, right? There are actually quite a few benefits of being in a party:

    1. You will complete the dungeon faster. Each room has a set of enemies that you'll have to defeat and with a party you won't have to defeat all of them yourself.
    2. You can save money if you have a healer in the party. If you receive damage, it would be good to let a healer heal you up before continuing on instead of buying HP potions.
    3. Party members can revive you. When you get knocked out, your party members can revive you on the spot and you can pick up any dropped equipment. Reviving by yourself would mean a bigger loss of experience points and also you'd have to run through that floor again. Not to mention the costly fee of retrieving a lost item!
    4. Combo strategies for hard opponents. When facing stronger enemies you can team up on one enemy for an easier battle. Dungeon bosses can be quite troublesome if you try to take them on alone, for example.
    5. Party Quests! Buy party quests for the monsters in the dungeon beforehand and collect extra money and experience.
The list goes on. You can for example learn new techniques from your party members. Not everyone's style of fighting is identical to yours and you might be able to pick up a few things from your fellow Mabinogi players. You often make new friends and you'll find the whole experience more enjoyable with parties. So don't hesitate. Join a party and go clear those dungeons!
